Science No Help in Olympic Gymnastics Age Controversy

Olympic gymnastics turns everyone into a developmental biologist: peering at the tiny Chinese competitors, viewers ask, “How old is she really?”

Perhaps a better question would be, “How old is anyone really?”

Pinning down someone’s exact chronological age from biological markers is impossible, say scientists, so tell your vain grandfather he can keep paying full-price at the movie theater as long as he wants.

“People age at different rates. I can’t even think of any possible way to [determine chronological age],” said Stuart Kim, a developmental biologist at Stanford University and expert in the biological signs of human aging. “There’s just no way around it.”

Kim’s view reflects the consensus view in aging research. While dozens of biomarkers are correlated with age, as laid out in the book The Biology of Aging, none of them is a good enough match to provide full-proof age determination. The same holds true for even the most advanced genomic expression studies studies.

That’s led most researchers to focus on biological age — how your body functions, not chronological age — the time that’s elapsed since you were born. That’s because it’s biological age that determines susceptibility to disease. It turns out that even scientists believe that age is just a number.

But there are human institutions that have age thresholds. Sports competitions like the Olympics are an obvious case where chronological age, by tradition, matters. But more serious matters also have age thresholds, including legal systems that treat minors, who sometimes don’t or can’t produce proof-of-age, differently.

That’s led a multi-university German study group to come up with a variety of techniques for estimating age. They look at teeth, finger bones, and the clavicle to help determine age, but the resolution of their distinctions is very low. They could, for example, propose a likely age for Chinese gymnasts based on their molars, but the standard deviation of their findings are measured in years. That means that any fourteen year-old could probably pass for 16 or vice versa.

A group of Spanish researchers has been trying to develop a better age estimation procedure based on rib and teeth x-rays, but the technique is likely to encounter the same resolution problem as other biomarker based techniques.

The hopes for finding a sure-fire way to peg age better than a carnie are likely to remain fruitless, according to Kim.

“I give you a car… and you’re trying to guess the manufacture date of the car. You could measure everything you wanted about the car’s performance, but I can’t think of any way to know the actual manufacture date of the car. Cars age at different rates,” Kim said. “People age at different rates, too.”

One of my favorite of my Twelve Commandments is “Enjoy the process.” I got this commandment from my father, because he’s reminded me to “Enjoy the process” so many times during my life. (His other main admonition: “Patience.”)

On our family trip to Denmark, I found a new application for this commandment. As we headed off to the airport, I announced to everyone, particularly myself, “Our trip starts NOW. Every part of this trip is part of the fun. We don’t need to fuss about spending a lot of time in the airport before we get on board, or traveling by car once we get to Denmark. The airport is part of the fun, and the car ride will be part of the fun. The time spent waiting in line to go on the canal tour is just as important as the canal tour itself.”

And actually, this really helped. By re-framing these marginal, disfavored parts of the trip, so that they were no longer inconveniences, but actually part of the action, I prevented myself from getting aggravated. Treating the Newark airport like a tourist attraction was surprisingly easy.

Now, would I have been able to keep up this attitude if our flight had been delayed for five hours? Or if the Big Girl started throwing up on the airplane, as she once memorably did? I doubt it. But during the normal course of events, it worked to make the usual wait times much nicer.
